Ortofon Carries the Turntable Torch
by marczeale
Yes, they still make turntables, because somewhere right now there are still a host of audiophiles who are humming to the old-school sound and purity of records that haven’t become victims of heated arguments or boring summer Sundays without a Frisbee. Ortofon, the Denmark-based manufacturer and industry leader for turntable components that give vinyl its voice, has been quietly supplying DJs and audio purists with an admirably simple product line for over 90 years.
Some of the products haven’t even changed in 50 years or so, like the company’s SPU series cartridges that first hit assembly lines back in the 1950’s. Others, like the new Verto step-up transformer that boosts the phono stage of high-end moving coil cartridges to improve stereo imaging, are more recent innovations. Regardless, the popularity of the brand is a sign of craftsmanship and design integrity that keeps spin doctors and vinyl buffs in high cotton.
Nothing about Ortrofon’s product line is fancy, it doesn’t have to be. With its meager yet solid collection of tonearms, styluses, cables, and cartridges, the genius of simplicity is realized.
