2009 Gumpert Apollo – Liftoff in April

by marczeale

The driving force behind Gumpert automobiles is Roland Gumpert, the former Audi Sport manager who helped orchestrate his team’s racing dominance, achieving four World Rally Championship titles for his former employer. Beginning in 2001, his vision for a street-legal super sports car was set in motion, when the first scale models of the Gumpert Apollo took shape.

This gleaming, spage-age sports car bears no resemblance to a sleek Porsche turbo or a throaty Corvette. It is well beyond their capacity and affordability, coming in at just under $400,000. Instead, the Apollo interior resembles the cockpit of a Formula One racer, and the power and speed of this supersport will make the urge to jump on the nearest speedway difficult to resist.

The car made the recent auto show circuit, first at the Geneva Motor Show in March and then Top Marques Monaco this past weekend. How the car achieves staggering numbers like 690 to 800 hp depending on model, a 3-second 0-62 mph, and a top speed over 224 mph with just an Audi V-8, 4.2 litre, twin turbo engine is not for us to ponder. Compared to other supreme beings with more hardware like the Ferrari Enzo, Pagani Zonda F, and the Lamborghini Murcielago, the Gumpert’s flying griffin emblem suits the Apollo to a T. Check them out here.
