In the twenty-two years that Studio Granda has operated an architectural firm in Iceland, founders Steve Christer and Margrét Hardradóttir have built a broad range of projects that span the major divisions of commercial, residential, public, and cultural architecture close to home.
Their most-recognized work to date would be the Hof House, a country estate located in a remote location in a fjord near the Arctic Circle. The concrete complex includes a barn, church, cowshed, horse stables, and house. The surrounding landscape is scenic if barren, offering a grand vista of the nearby island shores of Drangey and Málmey.
The builders took grassland directly from the fields that stretch out beyond the foundation and re-planted it on the roof of the structure. The roof utilizes ample natural light from clearstory openings, and the solid concrete foundation and energy-efficient geothermal and hydroelectric power provides ample insulation from the harsh elements.
