The Net Chair by Sam Johnson

by Lotus

Sam Johnson graduated from Ravensbourne University in 1998. He studied furniture and domestic product design. After Graduating he has worked with a number of designers before he opened up his own studio in 2001.

In his studio, there are always new problems to solve and new techniques to explore. His designs have been exhibited internationally and distributed through some of the world’s most leading design outlets, and seen regularly in the design press. His Net Chair was the winner of the Blueprint Award for Best Interior Product and 100% design in September 2008.

The Award winning Net Chair Collection by Sam Johnson is interesting with the thin lines twisted and turned, and intertwined with other threads in order to form the netlike frame of the chair. The chair was inspired by fishing nets left to dry in the sun. Each of the Net Chairs is made from thirty nine pieces, and with a different shape.

It is available in different powder coated colors. The chair has a sled base, and a more recent design with a four legged base is made available early 2009. Both of the versions could be stacked. For more information on Sam Johnson and his work, his site will be available soon.

Miki Astori’s Furniture Designs

by Lotus

After completion of architect studies in 1991, Miki Astori worked with Antonia Astori as an interior designer. Then he began collaborating with Philippe Starke, and took part in several projects with big name companies. Later he established his own studio in Milan that specializes in furniture design, architecture, and interior design.

He did a lot of traveling to come up with ideas and methods to use in his designs. He went to many of the Asia countries and came up with a new family of products that would balance ancient traditions with oriental suggestions using typically western industrial methods and high standards of quality.

Among raw materials, he prefers to use natural fibres such as wood, rattan, and iron. He usually likes to combine the materials together to create simply structured designs. His tables are simple, elegant, and comfortable allowing a luxurious living space. For more details on the Miki Astori and his work, please see here.
