Progressive Designs from Akemi Tanaka

by Ascent

Akemi Tanaka is modern furniture designer that is based out of Brooklyn, New York. Akemi earned her Master’s degree in Industrial Design at Pratt Institute and chose to focus on furniture and social design. Her work has been featured in many newspapers such as the LA Times and Philadelphia Inquirer, as well as books like Absolute Architecture and even had segments on HGTV’s Small Space, Big Style and the Oprah Winfrey Show.

The most interesting part of many of Akemi’s designs is that there is often much more than initially meets the eye, as she likes to use moving parts and allow her work to transform progressively, for example from a coffee table, to a bench to a loveseat. Akemi’s site has much more of her work as well as resources to track down and purchase some.
