Consider the phrase “cooking with gas,” which refers to a sudden boost in efficiency after a long period of slow progress. This might lead you to believe that a gas stove is automatically the best choice, providing the most power and efficiency, but is this really the case?

Gas and Electric

The first—and by far the most obvious—difference between gas and electric stoves is the method by which they heat and cook your food. Gas stoves use a natural gas supply that is ignited via a small spark to do the cooking, whereas electric stoves use the resistance of an electric element to supply heat.

As you may have noticed from your monthly utility bills, the cost of gas is somewhat lower than the cost of the electricity used to produce the same amount of heat energy. However, the plug-in-and-go option of an electric stove makes the initial outlay a little cheaper.

Basically, if your home is already equipped with a working and certified-safe natural gas line, the gas stove option is likely to save you some considerable money in the long run.


This is where the old maxim of “cooking with gas” is reinforced; natural gas stoves—like the ones available from LG—WILL provide more power than their electric counterparts. This is not to say that an electric stove is useless, of course; modern technology has ensured that both types of stoves will provide thoroughly cooked food and a high level of power output across a similar timescale.

However, the gas stove does have another minor advantage in this department. A gas stove will produce an actual flame when it is operational, a property that enables it to heat the sides of a pan as well as the base. This facilitates more efficient cooking over a shorter time as compared with an electric stove.


Modern gas and electric cooking units should require minimal maintenance, although of course you will have to clean them. This is where the electric stove has a slight edge over its gas-using rival.

Generally speaking, an electric stove will have a flat-topped, wipe-clean cooking surface, which is easy to keep in tip-top condition. On the other hand, a gas stove will have many nooks and crannies and more pieces that you must keep clean.

However, the detachable nature of the fittings on the top of a gas stove make simple cleaning and maintenance tasks a breeze.


Modern safety standards and legislation ensure that any stove unit you purchase for your home will have been rigorously checked and tested. However, the electric stove is marginally safer than the gas stove, simply because it eliminates the risk of gas leakage through human error.

That said, a properly maintained gas stove is an incredibly safe, efficient, and easily maintained piece of kitchen equipment for any home.
