New York is home to many great houses, villas, apartments, and of course, beach cottages. The famed Hamptons have everything from small cozy beachfront homes to multi-billion dollar fortresses that belong to some of the nations wealthiest. Located in Amagansett, New York, this lovely beach cottage was designed by Roger Marvel Architects and is referred to as Whaler’s Lane Residence.
This project began as a renovation and expansion of an existing building that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean with unobstructed views. Some of the new additions to this home include a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, trellis, kitchen, second floor bedroom and terrace. Even though the exterior looks surprisingly simple and old fashioned, the interior is stylish, modern, and cozy. Along the east coast, the traditional wooden shingle siding is a staple of beach towns. It’s very simple but with it comes a very nostalgic beach feeling, reminiscent of a time when there were no concrete super compounds. Even with the upgrades this property has tastefully preserved its essence present from before. It sits alone and secluded among grassy hills and little dunes.
The architects provided this description: “The original oceanfront beach cottage that occupied the site was reutilized conceptually for the project by maintaining similar materials and profiles to create a contextual residence. This property includes a large sand dune, that protects the project from strong winds, and public beach activity alike. The Landscaping has been accomplished with native materials and maintained with erosion control methods including Long wooden beach palates and boardwalks used to traverse the dune to the beach and guest house“.
